Chandigarh: Seeking higher revenue mobilisation in the coming fiscal, the Union finance ministry has set a Rs 5,758.40-crore collection target for the Chandigarh administration for 2026–27, beginning April 1. Since all of Chandigarh’s revenue is deposited directly into the Centre’s Consolidated Fund of India (CFI), the ministry has also issued dept-wise targets for both tax and non-tax revenue wings of the UT.The new mandate marks an increase of over Rs 362 crore from the current fiscal’s target of Rs 5,396 crore, which ends on March 31. With this upward revision, all revenue-generating departments will now have to recalibrate their strategies to meet the enhanced projections.Of the total target for 2026-27, the GST department has been assigned the highest share at Rs 2,892 crore, followed by Rs 1,000 crore from state excise, Rs 611 crore from sales tax and VAT, Rs 395 crore from taxes on vehicles, and Rs 310 crore from stamps and registration. The UT has more than 30 depts under its revenue framework—seven under tax revenue and the rest under non-tax revenue—but the bulk of the collection continues to come from tax-linked departments.“Since the central government fixes targets based on past performance, department-wise assessments, projected scope for increase and other parameters, all quarterly and even monthly financial reports now go directly to the ministry through a single portal. As a result, every financial matter of the Chandigarh administration—from expenditure to income and revenue generation—is monitored directly by the ministry,” a senior official told TOI.Box: Out of over 30, some key departments’ fixed revenue targets for the 2026-27 financial year.Depts—————————————————Revenue TargetsA: TAX REVENUE DEPARTMENTS1: GST (Goods and Service Tax)————————–2892 crores 2: State Excise————————————————-1000 crores 3: Sales Tax, VAT———————————————610 crores 4: Taxes on vehicles——————————————395 crores 5: Stamps and Registration——————————–310 crores 6: Taxes on goods and passengers———————–17.5 crores 7: Taxes and duties on electricity————————-15 crores B: NON-TAX REVENUE DEPARTMENTS1: Road Transport———————————————–180 crores 2: Power———————————————————–120 crores 3: Other administrative services—————————–80 crores 4: Medical and public health———————————61 crores 5: Police————————————————————25 crore 6: Education, sports, art and culture————————19 crore 7: Housing———————————————————7 crore 8: Public works————————————————–6 crore 9: Jails————————————————————–4.50 crores 10: Tourism——————————————————-1.10 crores Total Revenue Target for 2026-2027 FY——————-5758.48 crores
