Silchar: Cachar police seized 15,900 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup and 2,600 painkiller tablets worth around Rs 2 crore in the illicit market, officials said Friday.Acting on intelligence, a police team raided a godown near the accused’s shop at Gossaipur under Udharband police station on Thursday evening and recovered the contraband. Police arrested Sohud Ahmed Laskar (57) in connection with the seizure.Briefing reporters, additional SP (Cachar) Manas Saikia said investigators were probing how the consignment came to be stored at the godown.“The forward and backward linkages of the operation are being investigated, and efforts are under way to identify any other people involved,” Saikia said.Police are also investigating the source and intended destination of the seized substances. Saikia said codeine-based cough syrups are frequently smuggled into Bangladesh and that investigators were not ruling out the involvement of other conduits.
