Chandigarh: The Chandigarh administration on Thursday approved two key infrastructure projects worth Rs 28.9 crore — the Rs 22.9-crore upgradation of the Sector 7 Sports Complex and the construction of 15 permanent security check posts at the city’s border entry points — in a move aimed at strengthening international-level sports infrastructure and bolstering round-the-clock security across the UT.The upgraded Sector 7 sports complex will position Chandigarh to host major national and international athletics events, including the proposed 2027 Asian Relay Championships, the new security check posts will enhance border surveillance, improve access control and provide better operational facilities for security personnel deployed at key entry points amid the city’s rapid urban expansion.The projects were cleared at a meeting of the Appraisal Committee chaired by chief secretary H Rajesh Prasad. Finance secretary Diprava Lakra, secretary engineering Prerna Puri, director sports Sorabh Kumar Arora, chief engineer C B Ojha, chief architect Rajeev Mehta and other senior officers attended the meeting.The sports infrastructure project envisages a comprehensive modernization of the Sector 7 Sports Complex. The existing facility will be upgraded with new spectator seating for 3,400 people, a tensile canopy, and renovation and expansion of the pavilion to create dedicated facilities for athletes, technical officials, media personnel, VIPs and VVIPs. The project also includes associated civil, electrical and public health works.One of the major highlights of the project is the installation of international-standard LED sports floodlights. Four 35-metre-high mast poles fitted with 1,650-watt LED floodlights will be installed to provide illumination meeting international broadcasting standards prescribed under the IAAF Track and Field Facilities Manual. This will enable the venue to host televised international athletics competitions.“The administration believes the upgraded infrastructure will significantly enhance Chandigarh’s ability to attract prestigious sporting events while providing improved training and competition facilities for athletes,” said a UT spokesperson.

The Appraisal Committee also approved the construction of 15 permanent security check posts at strategic border entry points to replace or relocate existing naka posts based on recommendations of the CRPF, Chandigarh Police, Urban Planning Department and the Engineering Department.The single-storey RCC structures will include offices, control rooms, record rooms, security barracks, rest rooms, pantry facilities and toilets, providing standardized operational infrastructure for personnel deployed on security duties.The proposal has been prepared in view of changing urban boundaries, increasing traffic movement and evolving security requirements. The new facilities are expected to strengthen border surveillance, streamline access control and improve the efficiency of security operations while also providing better welfare amenities for security personnel.
