Ahmedabad: Room air-conditioners are set to cost about 5% more this summer than last year, as manufacturers face rising input costs and stricter efficiency rules. Companies such as Blue Star said higher commodity prices, new energy-efficiency labelling norms effective from Jan 2026, and global pressures are driving the increase. Industry executives estimate material costs have risen 8-9%, while the shift to more efficient models has added another 5-8%. Combined, these factors have pushed overall AC prices up by around 13%. “However, a reduction in GST has helped limit the impact on buyers, bringing the effective increase to about 5%. AC prices remained almost stable for the last four years,” said Mohit Sud of Blue Star Ltd. This price revision comes at a critical time as the nation prepares for record-breaking heatwaves. The industry is also grappling with logistical bottlenecks that have further strained supply chains. Despite the hike, consumer demand remains resilient, with many households viewing cooling units as essential appliances rather than luxury items.Market analysts suggest that early-season discounts and aggressive bank offers might still provide some relief to middle-class budget shoppers seeking comfort..
