Gurgaon: A govt school building in Bhondsi has come under scrutiny after a portion of its roof collapsed on Sunday, raising concerns over construction quality. The collapse happened at the govt senior secondary girls school, where a new block is being constructed. On Sunday, villagers visited the construction site and noticed visible cracks in the roof slab. To test its strength, they tapped it lightly, causing a portion to collapse.The district education department inspected the site and immediately stopped the construction work. Officials have said further progress will depend on a detailed technical evaluation.School management committee member Ramkishan Raghav said the roof slab had already been deteriorating. Meanwhile, district project coordinator (DPC), Samagra Shiksha, Gurgaon, Sudesh Raghav, said some flaws were found in the roof slab, including inadequate concrete strength, insufficient slab thickness, poor curing, and other deviations from engineering standards. The concerned agency and contractor have been directed to carry out necessary corrections. He assured that a detailed technical audit will be conducted and further construction will resume only after the report is reviewed. “Student safety is our top priority, and no compromise will be made on quality,” he said, adding that strict action will be taken if negligence or use of inferior materials is established. Meanwhile, locals believe that timely detection of the issue has averted a potential mishap, and all eyes are now on the technical report, which will determine accountability and the future course of the project.As the school building is being constructed, students have been attending classes in govt senior secondary boys school, with classes running in shifts. Parents expressed disappointment, stating that while they had hoped for early completion of the building, the recent developments may lead to further delays.School principal Beenu Yadav confirmed that the construction has been ongoing since last year and that concerns regarding material quality have been formally reported to the department. She added that classes will continue in the alternate building until the new structure is completed and that further expansion is planned in the future based on student strength.
