Jaipur: Doctors at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital performed a complex robotic surgery Tuesday, marking another step forward in the use of advanced surgical technology at the state’s premier govt medical institute. The patient, a 57-year-old Jaipur resident working as a nursing superintendent, had been suffering from persistent cough and worsening breathlessness for three months. Even short walks left him gasping. After clinical evaluation and diagnostic tests, doctors diagnosed him with diaphragmatic eventration — an abnormal elevation of the diaphragm that restricts lung expansion.Dr Amit Goyal, professor, dept of surgery, said the patient weighed around 110 kg, making open and routine laparoscopic surgery technically challenging and high-risk. The team opted for a robotic approach.Hospital sources said the surgery was completed with minimal blood loss, less post-operative pain and faster-than-expected recovery, underscoring the benefits of robotic surgery in complex, high-risk cases.
