Panaji: The North Goa District Road Safety Committee (DRSC), at its meeting on Thursday, reviewed a series of road safety measures, with discussions focusing on stricter enforcement against modified silencersThe growing menace of motorcycles fitted with modified silencers that produce excessively loud exhaust noise are leading to increasing complaints from the public.Officials said enforcement agencies have already begun seizing such modified silencers during drives in parts of the state.During the discussions, a proposal was made that enforcement should not be limited to penalising vehicle owners. Instead, action should also be initiated against garages and workshops that install illegal modified silencers.The members also recommended examining the trade licences of establishments advertising or fitting such silencers, arguing that repeated violations should invite regulatory action, including cancellation of licences if they continue to facilitate modifications that violate the law.The committee also revisited the proposal for deployment of patrolling vehicles by the public works department (PWD) to monitor national and state highways and major district roads (MDRs).Officials explained that the proposal was intended to enable regular monitoring of road shoulders and govt land under the custody of the PWD, where encroachments frequently occur.Apart from these issues, the committee also reviewed measures relating to the removal of stray cattle from highways, installation of safety signages on beach roads, improvement of KTC bus stands, and ensuring that speed breakers and pothole repairs are completed in a timely manner to enhance road safety.
