Ranchi: The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has prepared a plan to redevelop New Market on Ratu Road into a multi-level commercial complex with organised shops, parking and civic amenities. The proposed project will come up on a triangular plot currently occupied by old Ranchi Regional Development Authority (RRDA) shops. Around 262 shops operate from the ageing structures.“Giving a modern look to an important and historic commercial area such as New Market is among the corporation’s top priorities,” municipal commissioner Sushant Gaurav said.“The proposal is not limited to removing old structures. The objective is to ensure planned, comprehensive and citizen-friendly development based on local requirements,” he added.Gaurav held a consultation with shopkeepers on Tuesday to discuss the redevelopment plan. Municipal officials collected details about allotment periods, operational status, agreements and other records pertaining to the shops. The commissioner asked traders to preserve their original documents, which will be verified during the fresh allotment process.RMC will frame new allotment conditions and adopt a transparent, standardised mechanism for determining rates. Existing shopkeepers possessing valid original documents and fulfilling the prescribed norms will be given priority, officials said. The project is part of RMC’s wider plan to redevelop the city’s old commercial hubs. Similar proposals are being prepared for Daily Market and corporation-owned shops at Khadgarha bus terminal. At Daily Market, old structures spread across 1.17 acres are proposed to be demolished to make way for a multi-level parking facility, a commercial complex and a hotel. RMC expects the redevelopment to organise vending spaces, upgrade commercial infrastructure and ease traffic congestion on Main Road.
