Jamshedpur: Heavy rain, which battered Jamshedpur and nearly all of Kolhan division since Saturday evening and through Sunday, inundated rural and urban areas of East Singhbhum district. Around 15 houses collapsed in Potka block, many homes were submerged in Chakulia, while a road and a bridge were washed away.The Ranchi office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that Jamshedpur received 66.8 mm rain till 10am and another 23 mm rain till 5: 30 pm on Sunday.Water submerged houses at UCIL colony of Jaduguda besides those in Chakulia, Potka, and Galudih blocks.Baharagora MLA Samir Mohanty visited waterlogged villages in Chakulia block. “Food grain stock of the locals were damaged in the rain. The road, which linked a paper mill in Jamdol village, was also washed away,” he said.In Potka block, a small bridge across the Gudra river on the Bamanbasa-Bhalki stretch was washed away. Rankini Temple road in Jaduguda was submerged, disrupting traffic. MLA Sanjib Sardar said, “Dozens of houses collapsed in the rain. The officials have been asked to provide food and shelter to them till alternatives are made.”Water of Kharkai and Subarnarekha rivers inundated low lying areas of Jamshedpur. Deputy commissioner Karn Satyarthi said, “Water levels of the two rivers are expected to rise further in the next few hours.”Residents of various villages in Galudih block were shifted to safety after their homes were inundated.
