Nagpur: Vidarbha is expected to experience a complex summer pattern this year, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting a mix of heatwave days and above-normal rainfall in April.According to the IMD’s seasonal outlook for April to June 2026, maximum temperatures across Vidarbha are likely to remain normal to below normal. However, parts of Central India, including Vidarbha, fall in a transition zone where isolated pockets could experience above-normal heat, especially during heatwave spells. Historically, Vidarbha experiences two rainy and three thunderstorm days, as well as two to three heatwave days in April.A key concern for the region is the forecast of above-normal minimum temperatures, which means warmer nights. This trend is expected across most of India, though some parts of Maharashtra and Telangana may see slight relief, offering marginal respite to districts in Vidarbha.For April, the IMD indicates that while daytime temperatures may not consistently spike, heatwave days are likely to be above normal across Vidarbha. There is some positive news on the rainfall front. The IMD has forecast above-normal rainfall (more than 112% of the long period average) for most parts of the country in April. For Vidarbha, this could translate into pre-monsoon showers and thunderstorms, potentially bringing temporary relief from heat and aiding soil moisture.However, experts caution that the combination of heat stress and unseasonal rain could impact agriculture in the region. Crops like wheat, chickpea and vegetables may face accelerated maturity and reduced yields, while fruit crops such as mango could see increased fruit drop.The IMD has advised authorities to prepare for heatwave management, including ensuring water availability and public health readiness.With neutral El Nino-Southern Oscillation conditions currently prevailing, the broader climate signals remain stable for now, though variability at the regional level — especially in central India — will continue to shape day-to-day weather patterns.
