Kanpur: An additional district and sessions judge-cum-special judge (PC Act), Kanpur Nagar, on Thursday sentenced a rickshaw puller to six years’ rigorous imprisonment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder in a 2011 case. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him.The court observed that convict Hari Prasad would have to undergo an additional two months’ imprisonment if he failed to pay the fine. It further ordered that the period already spent in jail during the trial would be set off against the sentence.The incident occurred on July 4, 2011. As per the FIR, Hari Prasad killed a fellow rickshaw puller in a fit of rage after a heated argument broke out between the two while they were cooking food.Opposing the defence’s plea for leniency, assistant district govt counsel Shiv Bhagwan Goswami sought maximum punishment for the convict.The defence, however, sought minimum punishment, citing the convict’s poor financial condition and stating that he was the sole breadwinner of his family.After hearing arguments from both sides, the court sentenced Hari Prasad to six years’ rigorous imprisonment.
