Gurgaon: A 1.7km stretch of the Badshapur drain within the Global City area is set to be upgraded by HSIIDC at a cost of Rs 160 crore. Currently, this portion of the drain is unlined and open, unlike upstream sections that have already been lined and covered. During heavy rainfall, the stretch slows water flow and often leads to waterlogging in nearby areas. The drains will be upgraded into reinforced cement concrete channels with retaining walls, which is expected to improve water flow and reduce the risk of flooding.“Earlier, excess water used to flow onto open land. This will be prevented after work is complete. The drain will also have to be strengthened to carry the load. The work will be carried out as per NGT guidelines,” a senior HSIIDC official said. The proposal is at an initial stage, officials said, adding that while in-principle approvals have been taken from GMDA, final clearances and timelines are yet to be finalised. Moreover, HSIIDC is also planning to develop this stretch as a load-bearing drain to improve connectivity. “The proposal includes allowing movement between Mohammadpur Jharsa and Pataudi Road by creating a structure that can support traffic over the drain,” the HSIIDC official said.Global City is a major urban development project being implemented by HSIIDC. Spread across over 1,003 acres in sectors 36, 36B, 37 and 37B along Dwarka Expressway, it is being developed as a mixed-use area with residential, commercial and institutional spaces. The first phase, covering nearly 587 acres, is targeted for completion by June 2027. This phase includes development of internal roads, water supply, drainage, sewerage networks, electricity infrastructure, along with landscaping and plantation.Meanwhile, GMDA is also planning to develop another 3km stretch of the Badshapur drain towards the Najafgarh drain. The detailed project report is under scrutiny, and tenders will be invited once it is finalised.
