GURGAON: GMDA has drawn up a plan to repair and build service roads along three key stretches in the city. With a view to easing congestion and improve traffic flow on some of its busy roads, the authority will repair and construct around 3.5km of service roads, with tenders for the projects already invited. One of the key stretches involves the special repair of the service road along the master road dividing sectors 5 and 6. The 1.2km stretch has been pegged at Rs 6.3 crore and will be taken up over a 12-month period. Officials said this is the first major intervention on the road since GMDA took over the asset from HSVP in 2018. The stretch connects Sheetla Mata Road with Old Railway Road and passes through a densely populated area.A GMDA official said, “The stretch has been in poor condition and has not undergone any substantial repair since the takeover. We are now taking up strengthening of the service road along with associated works to improve overall road usability.”Another service road from Krishna Chowk to Rezangla Chowk will see an upgrade. The 1.6km stretch will be developed at a cost of Rs 6.7 crore and is also expected to be completed within a year. The project will include improvements to drainage infrastructure and pedestrian facilities as well. This is among the key links of older parts of the city and saw heavy movement of traffic through the day. The upcoming metro corridor also passes through this stretch.“Along with the strengthening of the service road, proper connectivity of drainage, footpaths and lowering down of greenbelt to ease waterlogging will be undertaken. The work will address the gaps while also improving the riding surface,” the official added. In addition, GMDA has proposed the construction of a new service road along the master road dividing sectors 33 and 48. Around 700m of stretch, estimated at Rs 2.47 crore, is expected to be completed within six months. This corridor is crucial as it connects Subhash Chowk with Hero Honda Chowk.Officials said the new service lane is being designed to streamline vehicular movement and reduce direct entry onto the main carriageway. “At present, vehicles often merge abruptly onto the main road, which leads to bottlenecks. Service road will be constructed on one side towards SEZ to give relief to heavy traffic movement around it due to IT offices,” the official said.
