Srinagar, Feb 21: National Conference (NC) General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar on Saturday reiterated the party’s firm resolve that the restoration of full statehood for Jammu and Kashmir is central to achieving sustained development, effective governance, and lasting peace in the region.

Addressing party functionaries and media representatives, Sagar underscored that genuine progress in Jammu and Kashmir can only be secured when the people’s democratic rights are fully restored, and the region is empowered with the authority of an elected state government. “The downgrading of J&K to a Union Territory has constrained local governance structures, hindered administrative effectiveness and left critical decisions beyond the reach of the region’s elected representatives,” he said.

Sagar said the National Conference has consistently championed constitutional methods and democratic struggle to ensure that the promise of statehood made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir is honoured without further delay. “The demand for statehood is not merely political rhetoric but a legitimate aspiration rooted in restoring constitutional dignity, self-confidence and administrative control to the people,” he said.

The NC leader added, “True peace, equitable development and meaningful political empowerment will follow only when Jammu and Kashmir regains the full status it historically held, ensuring that governance is truly by the people and for the people.”

Meanwhile, NC Provincial President Showkat Ahmad Mir on Saturday chaired a detailed review meeting with senior party functionaries at the party headquarters here regarding organisational and commemorative arrangements for the upcoming 11th death anniversary of the party’s stalwart and former General Secretary Sheikh Nazir Ahmad.

The meeting focused on finalising the programme and organisational preparations for observing the anniversary, which will be marked with traditional prayers, Fatiha Khawani and floral tributes at the Mazar-e-Anwar of late Sheikh Nazir Ahmad, the party said in a statement issued here.

Addressing the gathering, Mir emphasised the significance of remembering the selfless service and enduring contributions of Sheikh Nazir Ahmad to the party’s growth and grassroots engagement.

Sheikh Nazir Ahmad, fondly remembered for his organisational acumen, loyalty to party ideals and unwavering commitment to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, served as General Secretary of the National Conference and remains an inspiration for party functionaries and workers.

The meeting was attended by senior leaders, district office-bearers, and representatives of party wings, who reaffirmed their dedication to uphold the values and principles championed by the late leader.
