Thane: Nearly 25 to 30 residents of a housing society in the Umbarde area of Kalyan West allegedly fell ill after consuming suspected contaminated drinking water. Residents complained of vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach pain over the past week, triggering concern among families and society members. The affected residents include children, women and senior citizens. While some were admitted to hospitals for treatment, several others are recovering at home. The incident has created panic among residents, many of whom fear further health complications if the source of contamination is not immediately addressed. The society, which consists of 176 flats and houses more than 150 families, initiated an inspection of its water supply system after receiving repeated complaints. During the inspection, the managing committee allegedly discovered an unauthorised connection to the main water pipeline. According to the committee, the connection had been linked to a private storage tank containing borewell water. The committee suspects that water from the tank mixed with the society’s potable water supply, resulting in contamination and causing illness among residents. A written complaint has been submitted to the Khadakpada Police Station and the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation’s water supply and health departments.Water samples have been sent for laboratory testing, and residents have demanded a thorough investigation, strict action against those responsible and immediate restoration of a safe and clean drinking water supply.
