Chennai: At least 400 residents in Adyar have been struggling without regular water supply for six days, with many reporting that sewage water is flowing from their taps. Complaints to Metrowater have gone unanswered.Metrowater data shows that 35 MLD of drinking water is supplied daily to Adyar wards, including Gandhi Nagar, and Kasthurba Nagar. But pipelines here are frequently damaged due to digging for infrastructure work, particularly by Tangedco and metro rail.Residents say this problem is not new and that they have faced unreliable supply for years, with erratic distribution or water being mixed with sewage. Many have been forced to buy private water cans, spending nearly 5,000 a month. In apartment complexes, residents have hired water lorries to fill storage tanks. “Metrowater claims there is no crisis, but the supply is inconsistent. We spend 20,000 a month on water tankers,” said T Murugan, secretary, Balaraman Nagar Resident Welfare Association. “We complain regularly, but get only sewer water,” said S Karthikeyan, a resident of Gandhi Nagar.“Every month, supply is stopped for maintenance for at least three days, but nothing improves,” said S Thamizharasan, a resident. Despite repeated attempts, Adyar area engineer M Arunkumar could not be reached.
