Chennai: A 35-year-old remand prisoner died at Govt Stanley Hospital after he complained of breathing difficulty at Puzhal prison on Wednesday. Police registered a case and initiated an inquiry.Vasanthakumar, a resident of Elephant Gate, was arrested on April 5 for creating a nuisance while under the influence of alcohol. He was remanded in judicial custody and lodged at Puzhal.Prison authorities said he complained of breathing difficulty on Wednesday, following which inmates alerted the staff. He was first taken to the prison hospital. As his condition worsened, he was shifted to Stanley govt hospital for further treatment.He died without responding to treatment, police said. Following a complaint, the Puzhal police registered a case. An inquiry is under way to ascertain the cause of death.
