Bathinda: After waiting for hours for the bail orders of activists Shagandeep Singh and Baldev Singh to reach Bathinda jail, members of the farmer organisation BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) held a protest march in Gobindpura village. A bench of the Punjab and Haryana high court had granted bail for both on Wednesday, and the farm organisation hoped for their release by Thursday evening. However, they returned as the release was delayed by another day.Shagandeep Singh and Baldev Singh were arrested after a showdown with the police on Jan 6, 2025. They got bail after over 10 months. The farm organisation and the police had another faceoff on Wednesday, when farmers wanted to move towards Bathinda for a protest, but police stopped them in Jeond village and used tear gas shells.
BKU Ekta Ugrahan senior vice president Jhanda Singh Jethuke and secretary Shingara Singh Mann said, “Hundreds of activists, including women members, assembled at Bathinda jail, hoping both would be released upon completion of legal formalities. However, as the bail orders did not reach the jail officials, they returned in the evening and will assemble outside the jail in even bigger numbers on Friday.”Activist Harinder Kaur Bindu said the state govt has unmasked its anti-farmer face by committing repression against the farmers, but they were determined to fight any oppressive move and would continue to fight until tillers from Jeond village got ownership rights.
