SGPC member and Shiromani Akali Dal senior vice-president Amarjit Singh Chawla

Ropar: Anandpur Sahib police have registered a rape case against SGPC member and Shiromani Akali Dal senior vice-president Amarjit Singh Chawla following a woman’s complaint, a senior police officer said. The woman alleged that Chawla, who represents Sri Anandpur Sahib in the SGPC, had repeatedly raped her. Police said Chawla was at large and had not joined the investigation, with efforts under way to trace him. Officials declined to disclose further details, citing the sensitive nature of the case. Sources said the FIR was registered around a week ago.Chawla denied the allegations in a social media video and resigned from his SGPC and SAD posts, saying he was doing so on moral grounds. He termed the FIR “completely false, baseless, and part of a deep-rooted conspiracy” to tarnish his image ahead of the elections.Chawla said he had submitted his resignations as SGPC member and SAD senior vice-president to SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami and SAD (B) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal. He said he would stay away from public office until cleared by the judiciary.“Attempts are being made to shackle my feet, but the truth will emerge in court. Until my name is completely cleared of these charges, I will not hold any office,” he said.A former All India Sikh Students Federation leader, Chawla is a prominent Panthic figure in Ropar and Sri Anandpur Sahib.
