Ranchi: Several colonies located in ward number 5, which is inhabited by other backward castes and tribal communities, lack drinking water, proper drainage system, well maintained road. The absence of a road to the burning ghat is also a major concern for the residents of Booty Basti.The ward consists of Nayak Tola Bank colony, Ekta Nagar, Khijutola, Kishunpur, Lam, Badgai, Pahan tola and others.Locals said that drain water from Kishunpur and Lam colonies flow into the Jamuar river without being treated. Drains are uncovered at many places in Nayak Basti while there is no exit for water leading to its accumulation on a 50 decimal land. Moreover, there is no drain in Madaitoli and Pahantoli though the detailed project report is ready.Local representative of former ward councilor Kundan Kumar said, “The river water is getting contaminated.”Every household in Booty Basti reel under acute drinking water problem. Basanti Kumari of Nayak Tola said, “The water pipeline was laid down four years ago but there is no supply. Attempt to secure water source through deep bore well failed.”Area resident Jaikishore Nayak said, “People are dependent on tanker for drinking water during summer. They have to visit the Jamuar river, located about two km away, for other activities like washing clothes. Over 1,500 residents could be provided supply water from the pipeline about 100 meters. Locals laid a pipe but it was broken during the laying of the drains.Another resident Kapil Nayak said, “Roads are broken at a number of places, making them accident prone. Even the road to the burning ghat gets submerged during monsoon. Often people carrying the corpse fall along with the coffin.”A resident of Kishunpur said, “Commuters often slip and fall on the non-existent roads in the absence of street light.”
