Chatra: A 40-year-old man from Ramgarh, who was allegedly thrashed by a mob in Chiraiyatand of Chatra district on suspicion of being a child lifter on Sunday evening, succumbed to his injuries at Ranchi’s Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) during treatment on Monday.Abhay Kumar, the officer-in-charge of Piparwar police station, on Monday told TOI, “The injured man died during treatment. The matter is being investigated. The situation will become clear after the report of post-mortem arrives. We have launched a probe into the incident and are identifying those involved in the assault.” An FIR was yet to be lodged in the incident.

The deceased was identified as Rambali Rajwar, a resident of Barwatoli village under the Ramgarh police station area in adjoining Ramgarh district.Rajwar was seen loitering in the area on Sunday evening. Police sources said around 9:30 pm, a group of people thrashed Rajwar after suspecting him to be a child lifter. A team of cops from the Piparwar police station rescued him and admitted him to a local hospital for primary treatment. He was then referred to Rims in Ranchi where he died on Monday.Tandwa subdivisional police officer Prabhat Ranjan Barwar said, “The deceased’s family members said he was in Mcluskieganj (in Ranchi district) for epilepsy treatment. However, it is not clear when he wandered off. He reached Chiraiyatand on Sunday. It is a matter of investigation how he reached.”Besides Chatra, Bokaro and East Singhbhum districts, too, have witnessed a spurt in such mob attacks over suspicion of child-lifting. Over half a dozen such attacks came to fore in Bokaro and East Singhbhum since last week. In most of the cases, police acted in time to rescue the victims. Two days ago, Bokaro administration announced identifying around 300 social media handles for spreading rumours and incite tension and probe is underway to take appropriate action, Bokaro DC Ajay Nath Jha had said.
