New Delhi: IIT Kanpur alumnus and IndiGo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal has committed an additional Rs 300 crore towards the development of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT Kanpur, taking his total contribution to the institution to Rs 400 crore.

Gangwal had contributed Rs 100 crore in 2022 to support IIT Kanpur’s plans to establish a medical school on its campus. Under the latest commitment, he will provide matching grants of up to Rs 300 crore against contributions from other supporters, including alumni and philanthropists.

The funding is expected to support the expansion of the School’s medical education, interdisciplinary research and MedTech innovation initiatives.

IIT Kanpur’s development plans for the medical sciences ecosystem include a 500-bed super-speciality hospital on campus and a proposed 200-bed cancer care research centre. The planned facilities are intended to support medical education, clinical research and healthcare delivery while bringing together expertise from medicine, engineering and technology.

Prof Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur, said the additional contribution would help the institute accelerate its plans for the medical school and strengthen its efforts to combine engineering and medical research.

Prof Anil K Lalwani, recently appointed Dean of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology, said the contribution would support the School’s vision of bringing together medicine, technology and innovation.

The Gangwal School was established to leverage IIT Kanpur’s expertise in engineering, science and technology for medical education, interdisciplinary research and MedTech innovation.
