Drass, Jul 26: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will lead the nation’s tribute to the martyrs of the 1999 Kargil War at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass on Sunday, where he will attend the Shradhanjali Samaroh as the Chief Guest during the concluding ceremony of the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorations.

On Saturday, the Defence Minister arrived in Srinagar, where he was received by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. He later proceeded to Drass by road. En route, Rajnath Singh stopped at Gumri, where he interacted with Indian Army personnel deployed in the high-altitude sector and lauded their dedication and unwavering commitment towards safeguarding the nation’s frontiers under challenging conditions. He was also welcomed by BJP leaders during his visit.

At the Drass War Memorial on Sunday, Rajnath Singh will pay homage to the fallen soldiers by laying a wreath at the Cenotaph. The ceremony will be attended by senior Army commanders, Kargil War veterans, Veer Naris, Veer Matas, families of martyrs, civil administration officials and other dignitaries.

The Defence Minister will also interact with the families of the Kargil heroes and inaugurate the Virtual Walkthrough Portal of the Kargil War Memorial, aimed at providing citizens across the country with a digital experience of the memorial and the legacy of Operation Vijay. He will also flag off the Shaurya Vijay Yatra motorcycle rally.

The annual Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorations honour the courage, valour and supreme sacrifice of the soldiers who fought during the 1999 Kargil War. The two-day observance, which began on Saturday with programmes including Yudh Sansmaran, Gauravmay Sanskriti, Vijay Bhoj and Shaurya Sandhya, reaffirms the nation’s enduring gratitude to the Bravehearts of Operation Vijay and their unparalleled service to the country.
