Jaipur: Rajasthan has installed more than 48.1 lakh smart electricity meters, making it the fifth-highest state in the country under the Centre’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), according to data released by the Chief Minister’s Office Sunday.The rollout of smart meters began in 2020 under the previous Congress govt, when around 5.4 lakh meters were installed. Since then, installations have accelerated. Across the country, more than 5.76 crore smart meters have been installed in 25 states and Union Territories under the RDSS.State officials said the meters enable consumers to monitor electricity consumption in real time through a mobile application, helping them track daily and monthly usage. They also claimed the system has improved billing accuracy by reducing manual intervention.According to the power dept, the number of average bills fell sharply since the introduction of smart meters. In Jaipur discom, average billing cases dropped from about 1.4 lakh in 2025 to 4,751 in the first six months of 2026. Similar declines were reported by the Ajmer and Jodhpur discoms. Officials attributed the reduction to billing based on actual consumption rather than estimates.The govt said more than 1.03 lakh rooftop solar consumers have benefited as smart meters eliminate the need for separate net meters, resulting in estimated savings of Rs 72 crore. Officials added that the technology has also helped identify faulty wiring, monitor overloaded transformers and detect power theft.To address concerns over the accuracy of smart meters, the state’s three discoms installed 64,206 check meters. Officials said comparative readings showed no variation between conventional and smart meters, reinforcing confidence in the new system.
