Guwahati: Heavy rain lashed Guwahati on Sunday, flooding key roads and disrupting traffic across the city. The city recorded 79.4 mm rainfall, causing severe waterlogging on NH-27 at Jorabat, a key link to upper Assam and Meghalaya. The 9th Mile and 10th Mile stretches were inundated, submerging parts of the carriageway and choking traffic at one of Guwahati’s busiest entry and exit points. Several vehicles were stranded for hours.“We were heading towards Shillong, but due to the downpour, we were stuck in Khanapara for over two hours. The water level was so high that moving forward seemed risky, and there was no clarity on when the road would be cleared,” said Varun Choudhury, a resident of Guwahati. In an advisory, Guwahati Traffic Police said diversions had been implemented with immediate effect. Incoming light motor vehicles heading to Guwahati were diverted via Digaru, while outgoing light motor vehicles were diverted from Koinadhora point.“Motorists planning to travel out of Guwahati have also been advised to use the Narengi route as an alternative until normal traffic movement is restored,” the advisory read.Police urged commuters to plan accordingly and cooperate with personnel deployed to regulate traffic.
