Jamshedpur: The Steel City faced a renewed flash flood threat on Tuesday, with incessant rain and excess water released from nearby dams sending Kharkai and Subernarekha rivers sharply above their danger levels.Floodwaters entered more than 100 houses in low-lying areas of Bagbera, Jugsalai, Kadma, Sonari, Mango and Sidhgora by evening, according to preliminary estimates. Kharkai was flowing around 5 metres above its danger level of 129 m, while the Subernarekha was nearly a metre above its danger mark of 121.50 m. Both rivers continued to rise, officials said, warning that water levels could increase further over the next few hours. The district administration placed the Mango Municipal Corporation, Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee and Jugsalai Municipal Council on high alert. Residents in vulnerable localities were asked to move to safer places, while parents were advised to keep children away from riverbanks.East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Rajiv Ranjan directed civic officials to intensify monitoring and ensure there was no laxity in flood preparedness or response.Chandil dam, Galudih and Kharkai barrages released substantial quantities of water into the rivers, though officials did not disclose the exact volume.Jamshedpur recorded 68.5 mm rainfall between Monday morning and Tuesday evening, and more rain was expected. On Aug 14, over 500 houses across the city were inundated after a similar rise in river levels triggered by heavy rain and dam releases.Waterlogging was also reported in parts of adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan and West Singhbhum. Chhau Park in Seraikela was partially submerged, while West Singhbhum DC Manish Kumar inspected riverbanks and directed officials to maintain vigil.
