Guwahati: Rain-triggered waterlogging inundated homes and roads across Guwahati on Sunday, forcing evacuations and disrupting traffic and businesses.The city received 25.9 mm of rain. Beltola, Rukminigaon, Hatigaon and Anil Nagar were among the worst-hit areas, with roads submerged even after the rain stopped. Residents blamed inadequate drainage and clogged drains.“It is frustrating that every spell of rain brings the same problem. People must stop disposing of plastic, polythene and garbage in the open, as the city’s drainage system is highly vulnerable to blockages. The district administration must look into the issue and ensure that the ban on single-use plastic is strictly enforced at the grassroots level,” a resident of Anil Nagar said.

In Rukminigaon, GMC deployed three mini super suckers, while SDRF sent a rubber boat to evacuate residents.“Our home is completely inundated, and I have to urgently go to Shillong. It is a daily problem for us, as there have been days when I have missed office,” said Sharmila Bhattacharjee, a resident of Rukminigaon.Hatigaon residents sought permanent fixes, saying recurrent flooding forces shops to close.“The Hatigaon main road gets inundated with every spell of rain, and our shops have to be closed, which impacts our business. While we have been seeking a permanent solution, the govt has not even once come to us with it,” said Pratima Singh, a resident of Hatigaon.
