Chandigarh: A four-member Northern Railway team Monday inspected the site near the Hallomajra railway overbridge (ROB) where a door from a moving goods train fell onto a passing car, injuring a woman and damaging the vehicle. The team has been tasked with establishing the circumstances behind the incident on the Chandigarh-Mohali section. The injured woman is undergoing treatment at a Chandigarh hospital, while the other five occupants of the car, including an infant, escaped unhurt. The inquiry panel comprises assistant commercial manager, Ambala, Kishore Mehta; chief movement inspector, Chandigarh, Manoj Saini; an assistant divisional engineer; and an assistant divisional mechanical engineer, who is heading the probe.During the inspection, officials examined the accident site and began collecting technical and operational details. The statements of the train driver, guard, maintenance personnel, freight area manager and loading staff are also being recorded.Sources in Northern Railway said investigators would examine the condition of the wagon door, the train’s speed while crossing the ROB and the nature of the material being transported. The probe will also assess whether any lapse occurred during loading, dispatch or maintenance. The goods train was travelling from Ambala to Dhandari Kalan near Ludhiana via Chandigarh when the mishap occurred. As it crossed the ROB on Chandigarh’s main highway, a wagon door came loose and struck the car passing underneath. The findings are expected to establish the cause of the mishap and determine whether any mechanical defect or procedural lapse was responsible.
