T’puram: Railway Police have arrested 48 people in connection with thefts targeting train passengers during a special month-long drive, recovering stolen property worth more than Rs 30 lakh.The accused, arrested from different parts of Keralam and outside the state, were produced before court and remanded in custody. The arrests followed intensified checks and investigations at railway stations and aboard trains across the state.Police said thieves primarily targeted passengers sleeping on trains and platforms at night, as well as those travelling in crowded coaches. Mobile phones, laptops, gold ornaments, and other valuables were among the items reported stolen.Based on complaints received from passengers, railway police conducted scientific investigations with the assistance of the cybercell and intelligence wing. Analysis of technical evidence and other inputs helped police identify and track down the suspects, police said.The stolen property recovered from the accused includes 54 mobile phones, two laptops, gold ornaments, Rs 90,000 in cash, chargers and other valuable electronic devices. The total value of the recovered articles has been estimated at more than Rs 30 lakh.The police have initiated steps to identify the rightful owners of the recovered mobile phones, laptops and other valuables and return them to them.
