The leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Sunday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to explain the domestic impact, especially on farmers, of certain aspects of the framework finalised for an interim trade agreement with the United States.

Whether importing distiller’s dried grains (DDG) would mean the Indian cattle would be fed GM American corn and what exactly are the “additional products” referred to in the framework, he asked. He also sought clarity on import of GM soybean.

The questions come at a time when the party is mulling an agitation, alleging the impending trade deal would adversely impact India’s agriculture and textile sectors. Gandhi said in a social media post: “What exactly does importing DDG mean? Does it mean Indian cattle will be fed distillers grain made from GM American corn? Won’t this effectively make our milk production dependent on the American agricultural industry? If we allow the import of GM soybean oil, what will happen to our soybean farmers?”
