Pune: The city’s dengue and chikungunya counts show a puzzling divergence between PMC and state health data, with figures quoted by the two agencies differing drastically. While the state figures paint a worrying picture for the city, the civic body’s numbers remain significantly lower.Between Jan 1 and July 14, the state reported 452 confirmed dengue cases within the PMC’s jurisdiction—the second-highest among all civic bodies in Maharashtra. Yet, the PMC’s own tally lists only 22 confirmed and 540 suspected dengue cases as of July 24. The Mumbai civic body leads the state with 938 confirmed cases, while Thane stands in third place with 176.State-level district-wise data further shows that Pune district has reported 162 dengue cases, the highest among all districts in Maharashtra.

Palghar follows in second place with 142 cases, and Dhule stands third with 127 cases.The discrepancy extends to chikungunya as well. The state recorded 36 confirmed cases in the city between Jan 1 and July 14, making the PMC the civic body with the highest chikungunya count in Maharashtra. However, the PMC’s register shows just seven confirmed cases up to July 24. Meanwhile, the Mumbai civic body has reported 31 chikungunya cases, and the Akola civic body has recorded 29.Among the districts, Palghar reported the highest number of chikungunya cases in the state with 181, followed by Pune district with 101 cases and Dhule in third place with 41 cases.Asked about the discrepancy, Dr Rajesh Dighe, assistant health officer, said, “We are aware of this mismatch and will soon hold a meeting with the state govt regarding this. We have also learnt that many suspected chikungunya cases were reported as confirmed cases to the state authorities because hospitals failed to update the status of the cases. We have issued notices to these hospitals to revise their data.”
