New Delhi: Congress members of both Houses of Parliament are planning to request a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu to seek her intervention in the issue of alleged “purification” act at the Haldwani Ramlila Ground, after party president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a rally there, people aware of the matter said.

Following the leadership’s decision, Congress representatives on Friday evening were in the process of sending a letter to the President, seeking an early date for the MPs, including the Gandhis, to meet her. Condemning the alleged incident as an act of “practising untouchability”, the Congress leadership has been seeking the filing of an FIR against the guilty. Kharge, who is also the leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, on Thursday wrote to House leader JP Nadda, flagging a “delay” in taking action and indicated writing a letter to the Rajya Sabha chairman as well.

Earlier, party leader Rahul Gandhi called upon the Prime Minister to order the filing of an FIR against those who did the “purification”.
