Bathinda: Demanding declaration of education as a state subject, 90% reservation in jobs for Punjabis, and a judicial inquiry into cases registered against students and youth, the Malwa West Zone of the Punjab Students Union (PSU) staged a protest outside the residence of Punjab assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan in Sandhwan village, Faridkot, on Wednesday.PSU state president Ranbir Kurar, general secretary Dheeraj, and Faridkot leaders Harveer Kaur Gandhar and Sukhbir Kaur, while addressing the protesters, said Punjab was “surrendering” to the Centre, noting that it is the first state to adopt the National Education Policy (NEP) introduced by the NDA govt in 2020.
They said the Punjab govt should instead reject the NEP in the state assembly and formulate its own education policy, on the lines of its proposed agriculture policy. They also demanded that the state reserve jobs for Punjab residents in some other states, including Haryana and Karnataka.
Earlier, the PSU activists had a showdown with the police over reaching the residence of the Speaker. They wanted to hand over a demand charter to the Speaker, but in his absence, protesters pasted the demand charter on the outer boundary wall of the residence of the Speaker.
