Chandigarh: Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma has launched a fierce critique of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), accusing its legislators of undermining constitutional dignity through “theatrics” inside the Punjab assembly. The row erupted after AAP lawmakers wore vests emblazoned with slogans targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, blaming him for the ongoing national LPG crisis. In a written statement addressed to the speaker, Sharma — the BJP MLA for Pathankot — demanded to know why such a display was permitted. He has argued that wearing slogans and using the legislative floor for political stunts violates established parliamentary traditions and the seriousness of the House.“What happened inside the House was against the dignity of the Constitution,” Sharma stated, questioning what “compulsion” prevented the speaker from intervening. He emphasised that the assembly should remain a platform for serious public discourse rather than a stage for partisan messaging. The protest marks an escalation in the blame game over fuel shortages and rising costs in Punjab. While the AAP seeks to pin the crisis on the central govt, the BJP maintains that such protests disregard the rules of the legislative assembly. The speaker has not yet ruled on whether the protesting members will face disciplinary action.Ends MSID:: 129612337 413 |
