Ranchi: Civil society groups, student organisations and members of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) staged protests in Ranchi and several other cities on Friday, demanding electoral reforms, withdrawal of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.Gen Z protesters carrying placards and the tricolour gathered at Albert Ekka Chowk in Ranchi. Similar demonstrations were held in Dhanbad, Bokaro and Jamshedpur, with participants raising concerns over women’s safety, electoral transparency, voting rights and accountability in constitutional institutions.The protests were organised on a common platform by CJP Jharkhand, All India Students’ Association, All India Students’ Federation, Jharkhand Janadhikar Manch, All India Progressive Women’s Association and other student organisations.Protester Suhani alleged that SIR exercise had arbitrarily deprived lakhs of people across the country of their voting rights. She termed the process unjust and unconstitutional and demanded its cancellation, along with the resignation of Kumar.Another protester, Kaynaat Anjum, alleged that the CEC continued with SIR process despite objections from Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. She described the move as “unconstitutional, unauthorised and anti-democratic” and said the protesters would continue to raise their voice against it.
