Times News NetworkKanpur: Five people were detained after a protest over a woman’s death escalated into stone-pelting near Chakeri Airport on Sunday, injuring police personnel and disrupting highway traffic.Mala (32), of Sheikhpur village, was found hanging at her marital home in Lallu Kheda, a hamlet of Salempur village under Maharajpur police station, on Saturday night. Her family alleged that she had been murdered and demanded registration of murder case.After receiving her body following the postmortem, relatives placed it on the highway near Chakeri Airport and began protesting, leaving vehicles queued on both sides near Kulgaon.Police said some protesters verbally abused police personnel and pelted stones when they tried to clear the road. Inspector Chakeri police station Ajay Prakash Mishra, inspector Maharajpur police station and other policemen were reported injured.DCP (East) Satyajeet Gupta said two or three policemen suffered minor injuries. Additional police personnel removed the body and sent it to Mala’s village.Police registered a case based on a written complaint from her family and detained five people for questioning. Efforts are underway to identify others involved and determine whether anyone had instigated the violence. Gupta said strict action would be taken against those who attacked police and obstructed traffic.Mala had married Munna Nishad, a Lallu Kheda resident, about eight years ago. They have two children, Rudra and Vaishnavi.Her maternal family said she was unwell on Saturday. Her cousin Shani said he had taken her to obtain medicine and dropped her at her in-laws’ home around 3 pm. About an hour later, Munna called and said she was hanging from a noose.The family informed the police, following which police and forensic teams examined the scene before sending the body for postmortem examination.
