Srinagar, Oct 12: Chief Minister’s Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani on Monday stressed the need for sustainable tourism, environmental conservation and responsible use of natural resources, saying the Himalayan region must be protected for future generations.
Speaking at a function at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), Wani highlighted the ecological, cultural and economic importance of the Himalayas, describing the mountains as a major source of water, livelihoods and cultural heritage.
He said the Himalayas hold a unique place in the world and play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance, adding that preserving the mountain ecosystem is a collective responsibility.
Wani expressed concern over the excessive exploitation of mountain resources, warning that unsustainable human activities have contributed to climate change and increased the risks associated with natural disasters.
He said the effects of climate change are being witnessed regularly, while many environmental incidents and disasters go unreported. Referring to devastating events in the Himalayan region and neighbouring areas, he cautioned that ignoring environmental concerns could lead to more serious consequences in the future.
Highlighting the importance of tourism to Jammu and Kashmir’s economy, Wani said tourism development must go hand in hand with environmental protection.
“Tourism should be responsible as well as sustainable,” he emphasised, calling for proper assessment of the carrying capacity of tourist destinations to prevent overexploitation of ecologically sensitive areas.
He also raised concern over the growing problem of waste at tourist destinations and mountain routes, saying visitors often leave garbage behind, creating environmental hazards and additional challenges for those responsible for cleaning these areas.
Wani noted that adventure tourism, particularly activities in high-altitude mountain regions, can also generate significant waste if visitors fail to follow responsible practices. He stressed the need to ensure that waste is properly managed and removed from such locations.
He called for stronger environmental planning, effective implementation of policies and greater public awareness to protect the region’s natural resources.
Wani further stressed the importance of adopting a long-term approach to environmental conservation, saying natural resources must be used responsibly so that they remain available for future generations.
He said the government and concerned stakeholders must work together to ensure that development and tourism activities do not come at the cost of the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
