Producer V. Tamil Azhagan, a prominent figure in Tamil cinema and the eldest son of late producer and politician R. M. Veerappan, passed away on February 14 due to age-related health issues. He was widely respected for backing several landmark films and for his close association with some of the biggest stars of the industry. His last rites are scheduled to be held at 5 pm today at his residence on Thirumalai Pillai Road in T. Nagar, Chennai.

Tamil Azhagan played a key role in shaping mainstream Tamil cinema from the early 1980s through the 1990s. He produced multiple films headlined by Rajinikanth, including Ranuva Veeran, Moondru Mugam, Panakkaran and the iconic blockbuster Baashha, all of which went on to achieve significant commercial success and lasting cultural impact. His collaborations extended beyond Rajinikanth, with notable productions such as Kamal Haasan’s Kaaki Sattai and Pudhiya Vaanam.

In addition to producing, Tamil Azhagan also stepped behind the camera as a director. He helmed the thriller Manthira Punnagai, starring Sathyaraj and Raghuvaran, and later directed Nila Pennae, which featured Anand and Divya Bharti. Though limited in number, his directorial ventures were remembered for their distinct tone and storytelling choices.

Rajinikanth took to social media to mourn the loss, describing Tamil Azhagan as a dear younger brother and a warm-hearted individual. In his condolence message, the actor said the producer’s passing had caused him deep sorrow and extended his sympathies to the bereaved family.

Several members of the film fraternity and political circles are expected to attend the funeral to pay their final respects today.
