Mandya: The alertness of the district prison staff in Mandya helped foil an attempt to smuggle prohibited items into the jail after a former inmate allegedly threw a bundle of beedies over the prison’s high compound wall on Monday.M Shanthamma, superintendent, District Prison Mandya, noticed a man behaving suspiciously near the prison while she was on her way to the office. She reportedly saw him throw an object into the prison premises. Sensing foul play, she immediately alerted prison staff, who swiftly responded and apprehended the suspect. Upon inspection, the object was found to be a ball-shaped package containing a bundle of more than 100 beedies, which was allegedly thrown into the jail for inmates. During questioning, the accused was identified as Pramod. Officials said he was arrested in a case, lodged in a jail and released 15 days ago.Speaking to TOI, Shanthamma said she noticed the man moving suspiciously near the prison before witnessing him throw the package over the compound wall.Prison authorities have initiated legal proceedings against the accused for attempting to smuggle prohibited items into the prison. An investigation is under way to ascertain whether he was acting on behalf of any inmate or as part of a larger network involved in supplying banned materials to prisoners. Mandya West police have arrested the alleged accused and are investigating.
