The nomination follows the conclusion of his previous term as a Janata Dal (United) member from Bihar on April 9. His appointment was finalised a day earlier. Harivansh, 69, has been serving as the Deputy Chairman of the Upper House since 2018.
The nomination has been made under the provisions of the Constitution of India and fills the vacancy created by the retirement of former nominated member Ranjan Gogoi.
Harivansh brings with him extensive parliamentary experience, having served on several key committees of the Rajya Sabha. These include the Committee on Agriculture, the Business Advisory Committee, the Committee on Rules and the General Purposes Committee.
He has also chaired important panels such as the Committee on Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme and the Committee of Privileges, in addition to contributing to legislative scrutiny through his participation in Select and Joint Committees on bills including the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill and the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
His experience extends to advisory and policy platforms as well, including the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction. He has also been part of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and served as Chairman of the Content Advisory Committee of Rajya Sabha Television.
Harivansh first entered the Rajya Sabha in 2014 and was re-elected in 2020. During the recent Budget Session, he presided over proceedings in the House in his capacity as Deputy Chairman.With his term ending on April 9, the fresh nomination ensures his continuation in the Upper House.
