Prayagraj: The scorching heat has once again tightened its grip over Prayagraj, with the maximum temperature touching 44 degrees Celsius. The city experienced severe heatwave-like conditions throughout the day, with weather experts warning that the situation could worsen in the coming days as temperatures may soar to 47 degrees Celsius.According to the weather department, the minimum temperature was recorded at 27 degrees Celsius, while relative humidity levels ranged between 29% and 49%. Although humidity remained comparatively lower during the afternoon, the extreme heat made outdoor conditions highly uncomfortable and draining for residents.Markets across the city, including Chowk, Civil Lines, Katra, Kothaparcha and Bairahana, witnessed thin footfall during peak hours as locals avoided stepping out. Commuters, especially schoolchildren returning home in e-rickshaws and two-wheelers, were seen struggling under the blazing sun.Traffic congestion in some of the key stretches further added to the discomfort, leaving people stranded in sweltering conditions. The scorching sun forced residents to cover their heads and faces with towels, scarves and other protective clothing before stepping out. The high temperature and fluctuating humidity created challenging conditions, particularly during midday hours when the sun was at its peak intensity.People were also seen rushing towards stalls selling cold drinks, including lassi and juices and other cold beverages, to get relief from the heat. Meteorologists have advised residents to avoid outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated and take necessary precautions as hot and dry conditions are likely to persist in the coming days, with mercury going up by three to four degrees more.
