Prayagraj: Facing an acute shortage of govt accommodation in the city, the Prayagraj administration has initiated plans to develop nearly 1,200 new flats for govt employees in the expanding areas of Naini and Jhunsi. The proposal aims to reduce reliance on rented housing among staff posted in key offices while utilising vacant govt land outside the core city.Officials said the district has begun compiling details of available govt plots in Naini, Jhunsi and other peripheral localities that could be suitable for residential colonies. The exercise includes mapping plot locations, verifying ownership and assessing whether the land can support housing development. After compilation, the information will be forwarded to the state govt, following which a detailed construction plan will be prepared in coordination with the departments concerned and sent for approval. The move follows repeated representations by employees seeking official quarters. With limited govt housing stock in the main urban area, many personnel posted in the Collectorate, Vikas Bhawan and other offices have been compelled to arrange accommodation in the private market, often at high rents and with long commutes.Officials indicated the administration is prioritising sites that would not require employees to relocate too far from their workplaces. Naini and Jhunsi have been identified as preferred options due to their proximity to the city and road connectivity to major administrative and commercial zones of Prayagraj.Under the initial proposal, about 1,200 flats would be built across the two locations. The administration has kept scope for expansion if more suitable vacant govt land is identified in extended areas.Additional district magistrate (Nazul) said details of govt land have been sought from the relevant departments and will be sent to the govt after the compilation is completed. Officials said the project is expected to ease pressure on the limited pool of govt quarters in the city while improving commute times for employees in essential departments.
