Times News NetworkLudhiana: In a bid to improve solid waste management and stop open dumping of garbage, officiating mayor Rakesh Prashar and municipal corporation (MC) commissioner Ojasvi Alankar conducted surprise inspection at Jassian Road, Lakkar bridge among a few other sites in the city on Thursday. During the inspection, strict directions were issued to stop open dumping of garbage at the sites and take strict action against the violators.At the compactor site near Lakkar Bridge, the compactor was found nonfunctional due to which the garbage collectors, who had come to dump garbage there, had to wait for a long time. The officiating mayor and commissioner directed the officials concerned to ensure proper functioning of the compactor sites across the city. It has also been ordered to ensure functional generators at all compactor sites.There were several complaints about the dumping of garbage in the open near Jassian Road. This location is on a national highway and due to the garbage problem, the commuters who pass from here also complain about stray cattle menace. A vegetable mandi is also a functional nearby garbage dumpsite in the evening hours. The residents are forced to buy vegetables from a filthy space.Officiating mayor Rakesh Prashar and MC commissioner Ojasvi Alankar said that open dumping of garbage by residents is one of the major problems that affected solid waste management in the city.Different initiatives have already been taken and more steps are being taken to improve solid waste management across the city. But the goal to ensure cleanliness across the city cannot be achieved without the active support of the residents, he added.They said that surprise inspections would continue in the coming days too and no laxity would be tolerated in context to cleanliness.
