Panaji: Pope Leo XIV has appointed Archbishop of Goa and Daman Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrao as a member of the Vatican dicastery for communication.Ferrao is also president of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC) and the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI). “Cardinal Ferrao’s inclusion is expected to bring valuable pastoral and regional insights, particularly from the Asian context, into the Church’s global communication strategy,” said the CCBI.The dicastery is the Vatican body responsible for overseeing the Church’s global communication efforts, and Ferrao’s appointment reflects the growing representation of the Indian Church in the universal Church’s leadership structures. The dicastery plays a central role in shaping the Vatican’s media presence, including news, digital platforms, and public engagement.“This development is seen as a significant moment for the Catholic community in India, highlighting the increasing contribution of Indian Church leaders at the Vatican level. It also underscores the importance of effective communication in advancing the Church’s mission in today’s digital age. Ferrao’s new role adds to his existing responsibilities and is likely to further strengthen the voice of the Indian and Asian Church in global ecclesial conversations,” said the CCBI.
