Dharmapuri: A polytechnic student drowned in an agricultural well at Devarsampatty near Adhiyamaankottai in Dharmapuri district on Monday. His body was fished out around 12.30am on Tuesday.The deceased has been identified as Surya, 19, son of Ganesan, from Devarsampatty village. He was a second-year diploma in mechanical engineering student at a private polytechnic college near Nallampalli. Police said Surya and his friends went to bathe in a farm well at Devarsampatty, after college hours. Surya jumped into the well from the upper edge, but did not resurface for a long time, alarming his friends. Personnel from the Dharmapuri fire and rescue services and police, who were alerted, rushed to the spot and began search operations. “As the well had a high-level of water, rescue teams used more than five electric motors to pump out the water and continue the search,” said a police officer from Adhiyamaankottai police station. He added that the body was recovered after nearly 10 hours of efforts. Police sent the body to the Dharmapuri Government Medical College and Hospital for a postmortem.A case has been registered and further inquiry is on.
