During questioning, the woman claimed that the child was handed over to her on the morning of May 5 while she was at Ladies’ Park, situated within the Beniapukur police station limits. She alleged that an unknown woman approached her, identified herself as the child’s mother, and handed over the infant, claiming she was unable to care for him before disappearing from the scene. The cops, though, are checking CCTV footage and speaking to locals to ascertain her claims. The newborn, estimated to be only two days old, was immediately shifted to the Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC) and Hospital. After receiving primary medical treatment, he was admitted to the Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of the paediatric department for specialised care and nourishment.Hospital authorities confirmed the infant was placed in bed number 51, and medical documents have been formally collected by investigators to be kept in the case diary.Cops said that CCTV footage from the vicinity of Ladies’ Park has been reviewed and corroborates the sequence of events described by the witness. While a “Zero FIR” was initially registered at Karaya police station on May 6 under Section 93 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, the case is now being transferred to Beniapukur police station for further investigation on the grounds of jurisdiction. The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Kolkata has been formally notified via email, and a report has been submitted to the chairperson at their Elliot Road office. Authorities are now working to identify the biological mother and determine the circumstances that led to the infant’s abandonment.
