The championships feature competitions for a number of different games, including video games.

But it is the trading card game, or TCG, which captured Oliver and Edward’s attention – a strategy-based game with two players.

Since learning to play in 2023, the boys have been no strangers to the world of competitive Pokémon.

Oliver won first place in the Junior Trading Card Game division at the Pokémon Europe International Championships in London in February 2025, taking home a prize of $7,000 (about £5,500).

For the world championships, the prize money for first place is $50,000 (about £37,000).

“I would probably just save it,” Oliver said.

He added: “We play with our mum almost every day. She learned how to play so she can test with us.

“She just plays all the decks so we can test all the different match-ups when our friends can’t play.”
