Pune: PMC has carried out a demolition drive in Kharadi area, targeting a structure built on land reserved for a playground.“The property was demolished earlier as well. However, the developers repeatedly rebuilt it. The civic administration will now file criminal charges against individuals involved in the construction,” said Pravin Shende, an executive engineer in PMC’s building permission department.According to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials, illegal constructions spread over roughly 21,000 square feet were demolished during the drive. The plot was meant to remain vacant until the playground could be developed. Instead, a six-story residential and commercial building was erected on the site, prompting objections from local residents.Local residents said civic officials ignored the project until it reached six stories, raising serious doubts about PMC’s oversight and efficiency.Experts and activists point out that illegal constructions stem from several interconnected factors. Rapid urban migration drives a high demand for affordable housing, while skyrocketing land prices push people toward cheaper, unapproved structures. Fly-by-night builders exploit these conditions for profit. Further, weak monitoring by governing bodies like PMC and gram panchayats, combined with political pressure, often delays timely action against unauthorised projects.“To address this issue, local authorities must conduct regular anti-encroachment drives to demolish illegal structures. Increasing the number of inspectors is essential for monitoring buildings during construction. Additionally, blacklisting architects and builders who promote illegal projects can serve as a strong deterrent against non-compliance,” said Ketaki Paranjape, an urban planner and interior designer.
