Mangaluru: Bantwal railway station, redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, will be virtually dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17.Executed at an estimated cost of Rs 26.1 crore, the upgraded station features enhanced passenger amenities and modern infrastructure aimed at improving the commuter experience.An official from the Mysuru division of South Western Railway told TOI that the new station has been constructed in line with local flavours, including paintings and architecture.The Prime Minister had laid the foundation stone for the project in 2024. The station is among four railway stations in the South Western Railway zone taken up for complete modernisation under the second phase of the scheme.

Major improvements include upgraded waiting halls, booking counters, and interiors, along with better illumination, landscaping, and modern furniture. The circulating area has been redesigned to ensure smooth movement, with separate zones for pick-up and drop-off.Platform infrastructure has been significantly improved, with finished granite laid in front of the station building and extending 50 metres on either side of the building on Platform 1. The platform has been resurfaced and provided with full-length shelters.Advanced passenger information systems such as LED signages, coach and train indication boards, public address systems, and clocks have been installed.The station has also been equipped with improved lighting arrangements, façade lighting, and enhanced electrical systems. Provision for CCTV surveillance and better Wi-Fi connectivity has been made to strengthen safety and digital access.

The redevelopment plan focuses on seamless passenger movement, with segregated arrival and departure flows, improved signage, and integration with public transport systems.With an existing daily footfall of nearly 47,967 passengers, the station is expected to handle over 1.32 lakh passengers per day by 2067.According to a release, the station building has been designed to handle a peak hourly traffic of 13,270 passengers. The station is located 25 km east of Mangaluru and serves nearby regions of BC Road, Kaikamba, Panemangalore and Melkar.
