JAISALMER: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate India’s first Greenfield Integrated Refinery-Cum-Petrochemical Complex to the nation today, July 4 (Saturday), at Pachpadra in Balotra, Rajasthan. Considered one of the world’s most advanced refineries, the project marks a major milestone for India’s petrochemical sector.A Landmark of Engineering ExcellenceBuilt on Rajasthan’s desert landscape, the refinery is an outstanding example of modern engineering. Around 15 million cubic metres of earth were excavated during construction—six times the volume used for the Great Pyramid of Giza. The project used 1.6 million cubic metres of concrete, nearly five times the amount used in the Burj Khalifa.Approximately 300,000 metric tonnes of steel have been used—40 times more than the Eiffel Tower. The refinery also contains 28,000 kilometres of cables, more than twice the Earth’s diameter. Its 125-metre Coke Dome is nearly three times larger than the Gol Gumbaz.Development Projects Worth Rs 1.06 Lakh CroreDuring the inauguration, the Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone and inaugurate development projects worth around Rs 1.06 lakh crore. These projects span sectors including petrochemicals, urban transport, railways, roads, renewable energy, and power transmission.A Rs 79,459 Crore Mega InvestmentDeveloped as a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and the Government of Rajasthan, the 9 MMTPA Greenfield Refinery-Cum-Petrochemical Complex has been established with an investment of Rs 79,459 crore. The project integrates 9 MMTPA refining capacity with 2.4 MMTPA petrochemical production capacity. Production of various petroleum products from crude oil has already commenced.Advanced Technology and Global StandardsThe refinery has been designed to process a blend of Rajasthan crude and imported crude oil. It features a Nelson Complexity Index of 17.0, placing it among the world’s most sophisticated refineries. With over 26% petrochemical yield, the facility meets global standards of efficiency and sustainability.Boost to India’s Energy Security and Industrial GrowthThe refinery is expected to significantly strengthen India’s fuel security, enhance self-reliance in the petrochemical sector, and accelerate industrial growth. It will serve as an anchor industry for the development of petrochemical and plastic parks, encouraging downstream industries and ancillary sectors. The project is also expected to support industries such as MSMEs, packaging, textiles, auto components, and agricultural films, providing a major boost to Rajasthan’s economy.Major Employment GenerationThe refinery has played a significant role in employment generation. During the construction phase, it provided jobs to around 35,000 workers, while creating nearly 100,000 indirect employment opportunities in allied sectors.Strengthening the Vision of Viksit BharatThe inauguration of the Rajasthan Refinery by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to reinforce the vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India). The project is set to strengthen India’s position in the petrochemical sector while promoting sustainable industrial development and long-term economic growth.
